It was originally for string orchestra with oboe and basso continuo and has been arranged here for a standard woodwind quintet. This beautiful piece of classical chamber music was written in 1780 by the German Duchess Anna Amalia, who was a notable female composer and patron of the arts in her time, and a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart. It was originally for Clarinet, Viola, Cello and Piano and is arranged here for a standard woodwind quintet. It is a rich two-movement work, with a lyrical Adagio and lively Allegro with ornamented solo lines. It is a great addition to any woodwind quintet library and recital program since it features a woman composer from the Classical Period. Doxazomen Sou Christie (We Praise, O Christ) by KASSIA St. Kassiani (c. 810-c. 865 AD), trans/arr. by Kim Fleuchaus for The Sapphire Woodwind Quintet in 2019. Recorded in 2022 Born in Constantinople, Kassia was a Byzantine abbess, poet, composer, hymnographer. Before joining the church, she famously turned down the marriage proposal of Emperor Theophilos during a “brideshow” in which he presented a golden apple to his chosen wife. Insulted, Theophilos married another, and Kassia founded a convent. It was there that she began writing music and poetry, signing her own name to her compositions, which was unheard of at the time. Kassia is one of the first known medieval composers whose scores are still extant and able to be interpreted. In fact, some historians believe she joined the church to ensure the preservation of her music; twenty-three of her compositions appear in modern Orthodox liturgical hymnals and are sung to this day.
